Girl on Fire
Every gal and her dog are doing interpretations of Katniss, the Girl on Fire. Some use the books as reference, while other use the movie. Me: I take inspiration from the burning element itself.
I’ll admit, I’m a perfectionist. If I was ever going to do this manicure, I had to do it right.
In other words, it’d have to look like damn good flames.
Cue: Scotch tape. My life-saver.
Using Scotch tape, I cut out flame shapes for each nail. Not all of them turned out right – I’d applied the orange colour too generously over the tape, and when it came time to peel it off, some decided to be stubborn and remain behind.
But otherwise, my flames are relatively realistic-looking.
I indulged myself by purchasing the orange sparkly polish from China Glaze’s Capitol Colours range – the official Hunger Games nail polish collection. I bought Riveting; and riveting it is. It gives a beautiful orange and red glitter look, which is absolutely perfect for flames.
To highlight this look, I used Inglot’s Matte Top Coat on the black, to give it a smoky feel, while applying normal top coat to the flames to give them a real shine.
While they look great with this multi-textured look, I tried a matte coat over the entire nail just before I removed the polish, and I have to say, I really like how beautifully the matte makes the Riveting glow…
Too bad I only got one shot of it…
As you will no doubt have noticed, the Scotch tape left a sticky mess behind. I’d hoped that wear and tear would get rid of most of it, but by the end of Day One I was at my wit’s end – lint and other fibres were getting stuck to the stickiness.
My fingers were growing fluff.
Eucalyptus oil is a blessing in awful-smelling disguise.
As you can see in the above pic with the full matte, the stickiness is completely gone. Wish I’d thought of it prior to the photos…
I might point something out if you’re going to try this nail art yourself. You might want to add some flecks of yellow with polish or paint into the orange flames. I had two people comment on the vampire-goth look.
I hadn’t really considered how much the manicure looked like dripping blood when right way up…
Whoops. Ah, well. We learn from our mistakes, right?
